Those who have never lost their wallet or ID probably never thought about what would happen if you lost it while on vacation or on a business trip. Thankfully, this problem happens daily and there is a solution that isn't that painless. This has happened to me but I can't claim to be an expert. From what I understand there are two routes but correct me if I'm wrong.
1) The simplest route is calling a friend or family member and have them express mail your passport or additional form of id to your current location. In some instances this isn't possible say for example you lost your wallet the night before you are set to leave. That is where option 2 comes into play.
2) Option 2 involves boarding the plane with out an ID. Yes it is possible. First, if you lost your wallet but still have a credit card or you only lost your id then you will be able to print your boarding pass using your credit card to identify you. When you go through security and you tell them you don't have an id and you will be sent to secondary screening where they will go through your items thoroughly and eventually let you through. If you don't have a credit card then you must go to your airline's counter and wait to speak to a person and explain your story. They should issue you a SSSS boarding pass which signals security to do a secondary screening. Convincing the airline that you lost your wallet or id is a lot easier with a police report or some other verifiable evidence that brings them peace of mind.
On a side note: I'm not sure how checking bags works because I only had a carry on when this happened to me. If anyone knows the answer to that let me know!!
